Waste to Wealth: Insights from the Cashew Apple Valorization Conference

I had the privilege of attending and exhibiting at the Regional Cashew Apple Valorization Conference & Exhibition in Accra, convened by stakeholders including GIZ, the EU, and partners across the cashew value chain.

One thing became increasingly clear from the discussions:

The opportunity is well understood, the focus now is on building the system to unlock it.

Across presentations and engagements, several practical priorities were emphasized:

• Adoption of safe harvesting and handling practices to maintain quality
• Establishment of cold storage facilities close to farms to reduce post-harvest losses
• Strengthening aggregation and coordination at the rural level
• Developing efficient logistics linking farms to processing hubs
• Expanding processing capacity and commercialization pathways

These insights reflect a growing alignment among institutions such as development partners, government agencies, research bodies, and academia.

It was particularly encouraging to see strong participation from universities and technical institutions, reinforcing the role of research and capacity building in advancing this space.

As exhibitors, we contributed by showcasing products developed from cashew apple, demonstrating how value addition becomes possible when the right systems are in place.

The direction is clear. The next step is implementation.
